As a SA survivor (whose SA caused heavy bleeding followed by lifesaving emergency surgery where I got stitches) bipolar and PMD (severe mood changes/depression on and before periods) birth control pills do wonders for me. I needed it to maintain my mental health as I did not yet know I was also bipolar and wasn’t also on mood stabilizers that now along with birth control, help my moods stay stable. I was at a Catholic hospital that refused to prescribe me birth control except suggesting a severe one that goes in the arm while I was barely conscience and willing to say anything just to go home (that’s trauma for you) the nurses didn’t see through my insistence that everything was fine and sent me home. The record says “patient came with bleeding after intercourse” in the summery not mentioning the fact I had to get stitches in the summery but mentioning it in small print on the third page. I’m a lucky bitch despite all this cause of supportive parents who stopped them from trying to give me the arm birth control and asked to have me referred to a gynecologist. And that gynecologist gave me the pill. You don’t understand, every time I got my period I became major depressive and planned my Suicide. The pill put the bleeding trauma on pause until I could work with a good therapist who could help me with trauma. Without the pill I’d probably be a goner. Picture wanting to die every month! And getting flashbacks every month! I am still on the pill, Baruch hashem. I now take the brown pill in the box on the last week to get my period. It took three years and a lot of therapy and medication but my mental health is better. I don’t want to think of a world where someone in my circumstance wouldn’t be able to catch a break from suffering by taking a pill. It’s not perfect. The Covid19 vaccine when I first took it interacted with the pill in a way that gave me sudden major depression symptoms but that went away once my body adjusted. I got Covid three months ago despite taking every shot I was eligible for and couldn’t take paxlovid which sucked because despite being young and relatively fit, I got really sick and got phnemonia and needed constantly an inhaler and lung medication. Anyway. Birth control is great. 10/10 Would recommend. It’s not just for preventing unwanted pregnancy but that is good, it can help people with hormonal imbalances like period related depression or people with blood related sexual trauma like me. Is the pill perfect? No. It can interact in unfortunate ways with other medications or medical conditions. But is is better than a more serious method that can cause greater problems in the future and has less flexibility than the pill? Absolutely. That’s just my experience

Thank you for also mentioning Purity Culture. I grew up evangelical and deeply embedded in Purity Culture. Dating via apps has been a massive and liberating step for me. I understand all the concerns about commodification of sex, the inherent sexism and the market logic - but sometimes I get the impression people forget how crushing the purity based, "monogamy till death parts us" model can be. For example, if I read Eva Illouz I sometimes get the feeling she romanticizes monogamous marriages and it triggers me a little bc I get slight purity culture vibes. Idk but I am really glad the sexual liberation of the 70s took place even if some things are still really sexist.
